How we support your child

Regulation

Regulation is a developmental skill and a key building block. It underpins a child’s ability to develop cognitively, emotionally, and socially

Gross Motor Skills

This includes using the larger muscles of our body. It is balancing, catching and throwing a ball, playing on the playground and much more!

Fine Motor Skills

This includes using our hands and fingers with accuracy and control. It is building with Lego, colouring within the lines and using scissors to cut out shapes and much more!

Everyday Skills

This includes brushing our teeth, getting dressed, using cutlery and much more!

Play Skills

Supporting children's play skills such as coming up with ideas in play and pretend play

Sensory Processing

Supporting children who process and react to sensory information in different ways, such as sound or touch

What to expect in one-on-one child Occuaptional Therapy sessions

1

Initial Session

If a comprehensive assessment is required, the following will take place:

  • I will meet with your family to understand your child’s areas of strength and difficulties

  • Observations of your child participating in a variety of everyday activities

If a report is required this can be provided upon request

2

Goal Setting

We will collaboratively work together to create goal areas that are meaningful and important to your child and your family.

These goal areas will be unpacked into achievable, measurable short-term goal areas. We will continuously review progress towards these goal areas.

3

Therapy Sessions

Occupational Therapy sessions will be a combination of child sessions or parent sessions, depending on your child’s goal areas.

Play is the magic ingredient that supports children’s growth and development. It is for this reason and many others, that sessions HAVE to be play-based. We will always incorporate a child’s interests and strengths into play so it is engaging, enjoyable and Occupational Therapy sessions do not feel like work.

We will spend time with parents and carers to collaboratively identify strategies or recommendations that can be incorporated into a child’s everyday routines. If families feel more confident in what works for their child, they will be able to create further developmental opportunities throughout their child’s day.

What to expect in Occupational Therapy developmental screenings

Why developmental screenings matter?

The early years of a child's life are fundamental to their cognitive, emotional and social development. We understand that every child is different and vary in the development of their skills. There is a typical, predictable progression referred to as ‘developmental milestones’ which can be a helpful guideline to understand how children develop.

What are developmental screenings?

Our OT developmental screenings provide valuable insights into your child’s strengths and areas where they may need support at home, school or in the community.

Identifying areas where your child could benefit from additional support means we can offer recommendations and provide referrals to early intervention if necessary to support a child’s development and ability to thrive.

Developmental screenings are not a complete assessment or evaluation.

What to expect?

Out OT developmental screenings are comprehensive yet accessible. Our developmental screening service typically includes:

  • A 30-minute individual screener where we will

    • Observe your child's gross and fine motor skills.

    • Gather information about your child’s emotional responses and sensory processing differences.

    • Observe and gather information about your child’s participation in everyday activities.

  • A brief written report detailing your child’s current abilities and any recommendations for further supports.
